Long Term Exchange
Long Term is first of the two options you have as an exchange student. Here are some details.
Students age 14.5 to 18.5
11 month exchange duration.
School attendance is required.
Students live with 1 to 4 host families throughout the year.
Total immersion program to learn a culture and language.
Average cost including spending money, required insurance, possible language camps, optional additional travel tours, program training: $1,700 to $5,000, plus airfare.
Your local family hosts and inbound exchange student during your absence.
Your family helps (along with 3 additional families) with the hosting responsibilities of an inbound exchange student during your absence.

Go to the ESSEX (Eastern States Student Exchange) website: www.exchangestudent.org
On the left side, in the blue bar, go to ‘Application Process’ and click on ‘Long Term’

In the middle of this page is the ‘Long Term Application Download’
Click on ‘Download the Application’
The application form is a fillable PDF. Only typed applications will be accepted.
Be sure to familiarize yourself with the application (read through all of it) before filling it out.
Save your application with the name format ‘OB FIRST NAME LAST NAME 2016.17’
Email the program Chair at email@example.com and request the address where to send the first two pages of your application and continue to complete the rest of the application.
The ENTIRE application needs to be filled out COMPLETELY, however
Print and send the first two pages of this application, along with your (non-refundable) application fee ($300 check), made out to Rotary District 7255 – Youth Exchange, to the District Chair to confirm your interest and serious inquiry.
You will need to make appointments with your Doctor and Dentist to have some of this application completed -- this will take the most time, so make the appointments with both immediately to expedite the process
This application (all 15 pages) should be brought with you for the required interviews, details to follow.
We will accept the application (minus the doctor, and dentist) for the Interviews. You will have a week or two after the interviews to complete the entire application to submit to the YE Chair
Follow the Directions—they are very clear
Be sure it to a copy to your computer for your reference, and to complete it.
Be sure to use a current school photo or a current passport photo ONLY for the first page photo (do not include a snapshot or selfie)—directions are in the photo box
Email the YE District Chair and the Sponsoring Rotary Club Youth Exchange Officer SECTION A (two pages) of the application as a PDF
When the YE Chair receives the first two pages, you will receive the details of the required Interviews.
Things you may need to know to complete the Long Term Application:

You will have to email the Club Youth Exchange Officer and/or the District Youth Exchange Chair for detailed club information that will need to be included in your Long Term Application (SECTION E),including the Rotary Club (here) Sponsoring the exchange, the Sponsoring Rotary Club President (here) , the Sponsoring Rotary Club Youth Exchange Officer (YEO), and the Rotary Club number—this will differ for each student, (by area the student is from)

Be sure to CAPITALIZE YOUR LAST NAME ONLY AT THE TOP OF THE APPLICATION (ie: John SMITH). All the same information will populate automatically throughout the application.
Be sure to save a copy of the completed application to your computer for reference and if anything needs to be edited in any way.
Fees and Costs
$300 nonrefundable application fee
Outbound Training fees $1300.00, made in monthly payments if necessary, with the balance paid by June 1st.
Students should be prepared to bring their own money for expenses during the year, which could be in the form of a debit/credit card for school supplies, toiletries, makeup, clothes, touring money, emergencies, etc. ($1000+)
Airfare (this will vary according to the country exchanging to.)
Travel insurance is required (this will vary according to the country exchanging to ($800+)
Some countries require additional Travel Insurance (this will vary according to the country exchanging to, ($800+)
Some countries require language camp ($ 300+)
Students are paid an allowance by the Hosting Rotary Club during their exchange year ($75-$125 monthly, which varies by country and club)
